Former pupil James Kerr, who is 9 months into a Graduate Development programme with National Grid, returned to Bablake with colleague Dr Romani Fahmi, a Chartered Power Systems Engineer, to talk to the 6th Form Forum about Engineering and the variety of careers available at National Grid.
The session raised a number of interesting discussion points: for example, the difference between scientists and engineers, the emphasis on precision and multi-phase planning when looking to develop and maintain energy supplies, and the broad variety of career opportunities within a large, international organisation. James also explained a number of the attractive options offered after A Level, including links before and during university study.
Ellie Morris and Anna French were instrumental in establishing the 6th Form Forum this year. They canvassed their peers on which professions they would like to have featured in these occasional meetings before using contacts on the staff or information gathered from the Careers Department to invite speakers. Guest speakers have been invited to present a brief talk on their vocation and answer questions from eager L6th pupils.
The programme will continue in the Autumn and both Ellie and Anna would be delighted to receive further feedback from peers on the career areas that would be of most interest.
