Pupils' Thirst for Roman Baths

Archive Archive

On Expeditions Day, the majority of the 3rd Year, as reward for rigorous revision and completion of recent internal examinations, chose a trip to the Roman Baths at idyllic Aquae Sulis (modern Bath).

Pupils received a presentation about the Roman Baths, had a chance to handle some of the more usual objects found at the Baths and then explored the site at their leisure with an audio guide to help explain the significance of finds and reconstructions.

Mr Daniel Menashe, Head of Classics, said: ‘It was excellent to allow the pupils to set Aquae Sulis in context since they have really enjoyed studying this topic this year. Those carrying onto GCSE Latin or Classical Civilisation will find the visit an excellent preliminary for their studies on everyday life in the Roman world.’

Initially, the return trip hinted at recreating a journey time more suited to the carriage speeds of Roman Britain, as Half Term traffic built, however the pace gathered and the group returned exhilarated by the charm of the visit, fantastic summer sunshine and doubtless the prospect of a few days off school.

On the same day, the Shells headed for the Black Country museum, the 2nds visited Birmingham's Think Tank and the remainder of the 3rd Year enjoyed Nottingham's Law Courts (as observers), while the majority of the 4th Year made progress with the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
