Salvete (2)- Mr Nick James (Professional Cricket Coach)

Senior School Staff

As cricket fans in the Bablake community contemplate, perhaps with a little envy, yet another World Cup one day tournament win for the Australian side despite a valiant challenge from New Zealand, it is a suitable day to welcome our new professional cricket coach, Nick James.

Nick currently works as a coach at Complete Cricket, whilst also playing for Berskwell CC in the Birmingham Premier Cricket League. He started playing cricket at the age of 9 for Aldridge Cricket Club before being selected for Staffordshire (U11 and U12). Nick then moved counties to Warwickshire and represented them from U13 to U19 level. As captain, his side won the U17 County Championship and during that season Nick scored the most runs in the county for that age group.

He signed his first professional contract at 18 with Warwickshire, before leaving four years later to play for Glamorgan, where he reached the 40 Over Final at Lords, narrowly losing to a strong Nottinghamshire side. Nick has also represented England U19s.

His career highlights include: playing in the same side as Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Kumar Sangakkara and Dale Steyn and against Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen, and scoring 60* against West Indies A. His highest score was 234 against Hampshire 2nd XI and his best bowling was 6-51 versus Gloucestershire. He also toured Australia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Footnote Mr Alex Phillips, last season's professional cricket coach, left us to take up a career in teaching Mathematics. We thank him for his expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm and wish him the best of luck for the future.
