Presentation Day For Bablake's EES Team

Design Technology Sixth Form

After six months of problem solving, early morning meetings and considerable effort, Head of Design Technology Mr Chris West reports that Bablake's Engineering Education Scheme (EES) team presented its work to the world at its assessment day in Solihull this week.

The day started with the team making last minute tweaks and alterations to its presentation at 7.15am, prior to departure, in a final bid to gain an edge over the other 84 schools present from across the Midlands.

After setting up its impressive display, the group made an initial presentation to a team of engineers before returning to its stand to face questions from the many visitors. Encouragingly the team's unusual and attractive solution to sponsor company Arup’s brief to design a roof and metro station for the 2022 football World Cup in Doha was well received by all those who saw it.

The judges returned to the group for a question and answer session in the afternoon, during which the team of Tom Betts, Chris Blackett, Edward Collier and James Horton was complimented on its work and presentation skills.

Mr West praised the team saying: ‘This was one of the hardest working and most self-motivated teams of recent years. Each member has worked with great enthusiasm over the last six months. Considerable thanks must also be given to our mentor engineers from Arup, Josh and Adam, for their considerable support and inspiration. Hopefully the pupils involved have had a great insight into engineering and the opportunities it offers them’.

An extra bonus to the day was a photo opportunity with Lord Digby Jones, former head of the CBI, and a great advocate of engineering. The boys managed to grab a ‘selfie’ with him as he entered the building; it seems after our L6th boldly asked the Archbishop of Canterbury that no public figure is safe from this 'trend'!
