Charity Abseil Raises Over £700 For Teenage Cancer Trust

Senior School Charity

The dedication to charitable work shown by Bablake staff and pupils is unquestionable throughout the year, but yesterday's charity abseil from our Main Tower for Teenage Cancer Trust took this to another level in terms of teamwork, trust and bravery. Importantly, over £700 has been raised too!

On one of the hottest days in history in Coventry, Mr Kris Tyas (Head of Mathematics), Geography teachers Mrs Joanne MacGibbon and Miss Rebecca Priest, and our 3M tutor group were all instrumental in setting up the event. They even persuaded Headmaster Mr John Watson to take part, as well as organising a pupil raffle for the chance to abseil and coordinating risk assessments and the climbing regalia necessary to allow the event to run so smoothly.

Mrs MacGibbon said: 'I am absolutely delighted and incredibly impressed that our Headmaster and all the pupils both embraced and completed the challenge, despite a number of them having a significant fear of heights! The Headmaster himself set a wonderful example to the pupils and I was so proud of all the pupils who abseiled. A fantastic amount of money has also been raised for an incredibly worthy cause!'

Earlier in the day, Katie Hodge, one of our U6th students, pictured with her teachers, became the first Bablake pupil ever to abseil officially down the Main Tower. Jonathan Porter was close on her heels as the next to do a test run. We thank both of them as well as Josie Hyde for their excellent help with setting up the ropes alongside Mr Tyas in the morning.

Lily Allison, Will Beaty, Grace Fisher, Ellie Herniman, Ravi Mody, Rob Tyas and Harry White were the pupils who should be congratulated for their bravery and immaculate attention to instructions from Mr Tyas. The majority of these had never abseiled before and to do this from such a considerable height will be an achievement they will remember for many years. Well done too to the crowds of pupils and staff who were cheering them on from the ground - it was lovely to see the Bablake community in action!

Photographs are being added to our official Facebook page, a video of the Headmaster's abseil will be posted soon, and tomorrow's news will report on our Headmaster's view of events!
