Seven Year Wait Ends In Victory

Senior School Sport

For seven years, U6th pupil and A Team captain George Esworthy has dreamt of lifting the Coventry Schools Lightning Chess trophy. Last Friday evening, this dream finally came true!

After four rounds of Lightning Chess, involving pupils from Bablake and three other schools in the region, George Esworthy and reigning champion Rajen Parekh faced each other to decide the 2015 winner.

Mr Andrew Chowne (Master i/c Chess) commented: 'In a tense contest, both players swapped pieces until it became a race for their pawns to be converted. George managed to trap Rajen's prominent pawn and the latter nobly conceded the game and the trophy.'

Well done to George Esworthy on his win, and of course thanks to him for his service to the sport over the last seven years, We are certain 4th year Rajen's excellent progress will continue next year and into our 6th Form, as he tries to emulate and better the performances of legendary former pupils Mark and Paul Lam. Rajen will surely add to the two Lightning Chess trophies he already holds.

Earlier in the evening, Mr Chowne presented B Team players Jakevir Shoker and Ciara Wyman (captain) with the Coventry Schools Chess League Division 2 trophy, and George Esworthy with the Coventry Schools Cup. We were almost celebrating another Bablake quadruple, like 2014, as our A Team was second to Warwick School by just a single board in the Division 1 table.
